✊🏾 Original 1960s Pan-African Flag Pinback Button – OAAU Malcolm X Era

This original Pan-African pinback button dates to the 1960s, one of the most turbulent and transformative decades in American history. The era was defined by mass protest, political realignment, global decolonization movements, and a fundamental reexamination of civil rights, human rights, and national identity.

🌍 What OAAU Means
OAAU stands for the Organization of Afro-American Unity. It was founded by Malcolm X in 1964 following his departure from the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X publicly announced the organization on June 28, 1964, at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City.

The OAAU was modeled after the Organization of African Unity, which united newly independent African nations. Its purpose was to promote unity among people of African descent and to frame the struggle for Black freedom as a human rights issue, not solely a domestic civil rights matter.

🟥⬛🟩 Pan-African Flag Significance
This pin features the red, black, and green Pan-African tricolor. Originally adopted in 1920 by Marcus Garvey’s UNIA, the flag became widely visible again during the 1960s Black Liberation movement as a symbol of unity, self-determination, and shared cultural identity.

  • Red – Blood and sacrifice for liberation
  • Black – The people
  • Green – Africa, land, and future

Pins like this were worn at rallies, meetings, and public demonstrations as visible statements of political alignment and cultural pride.
